Why MDR
MDR Construction Co., Inc. is a heavy civil contractor headquartered in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. Since 1994, we have built roadways, water mains, sewer and drainage systems, and site work for MassDOT, cities, towns, and other public agencies across Massachusetts.
Our people are the reason we have lasted. Many of our team members have been with MDR for 15 to 20 years or more, and looking after them is our first priority. When you join MDR, you join a company that knows your name, backs you up in the field, and wants you here for the long run.
Who We're Looking For
We are looking for positive, upbeat self-starters who take initiative and work well with others. We value people who lead by example, bring out the best in their teams, and help turn challenges and negative attitudes into constructive teamwork.
If you want to be a star player on a team that sticks together, we want to meet you.
The Role
We are looking for an organized, motivated Assistant Project Manager to support our MassDOT and municipal projects: roadway reconstruction, water mains, sanitary sewer, drainage, and related site work.
You will split your time between the office and the field, working side by side with our Project Managers, Superintendents, and Foremen. This is a development role. Our goal is to train you into a Project Manager who can run MassDOT and municipal projects on your own.
What You'll Do
Project controls
Help build and maintain project schedules and short-term look-aheads.
Track costs, quantities, and production against the estimate and budget.
Help prepare monthly cost reports, forecasts, and cost-to-complete projections.
Review quantities and help prepare monthly payment requisitions.
Documentation & procurement
Prepare and track submittals, shop drawings, RFIs, and material certifications.
Get and compare quotes from subcontractors and suppliers, and prepare purchase orders and subcontracts for approval.
Handle the submittal process for materials and subcontractor approval.
Order and schedule pipe, precast structures, aggregates, paving materials, and traffic control.
Spot extra work, changed conditions, utility conflicts, and plan discrepancies, and help document change orders, force-account, and T&M work.
Coordination & field
Review plans, specifications, addenda, and permits at the start of each project.
Run meeting notes and follow up on open items.
Coordinate with MassDOT, town officials, resident engineers, utility companies, and police details.
Visit sites regularly to check progress, quantities, safety, and contract compliance.
Help with utility shutdowns, testing, inspections, paving, as-builts, punch lists, and closeout.
What You Bring
1 to 5 years in construction, engineering, estimating, or project coordination.
A degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field. Equivalent heavy civil field experience counts just as much.
Ability to read plans, specifications, quantity sheets, and contract documents.
Strong organization and attention to detail, especially with costs, quantities, and paperwork.
Clear, professional communication with crews, subcontractors, engineers, and public officials.
Comfortable with Excel, Word, and Outlook.
A valid driver's license and the ability to travel to sites across Massachusetts.
Nice to have
Experience with MassDOT or municipal public works projects, specifications, and payment procedures.
Background in water main, sewer, drainage, earthwork, or paving work.
Experience with public bid, unit-price contracts, change orders, and force-account records.
Bluebeam, AutoCAD, or scheduling software experience.

Medical and dental insurance, 100% paid by MDR
11 paid holidays, 5 paid sick days, and 1 to 3 weeks of paid vacation
Yearly bonus for exemplary employees

Where This Can Lead
You will get hands-on exposure to every part of a heavy civil project: estimating, planning, procurement, field operations, cost control, change management, and closeout. You will learn from people who have been doing this work at MDR for decades, with a clear path to Project Manager.
Work Environment
Regular site visits are required. You must be able to walk uneven ground, work around heavy equipment and traffic, enter excavations only when properly protected and authorized, and work outdoors in all weather. Proper PPE is required on site at all times. PPE is supplied by MDR Construction Co., Inc.
